What I'm Up To...I'll Drink to That

Monday, May 29, 2017

Happy Memorial Day! I hope your day has been filled with BBQ, family, and fun! Today for my What I'm Up To post, we are going to be doing something a little different. The What I'm Up To posts will continue, but they will be interspersed with critiques and reviews of some of the albums I'm listening to, movies/ TV shows I'm watching, and books I'm reading. These will be more in-depth then the short overviews I typically feature. I would love to hear your feedback as always and if you have any certain posts you want to hear more about, I would be happy to oblige!

As you know, I've been reading "I'll Drink to That" by Betty Halbreich for the last couple of weeks. I just finished it last night and absolutely adored it. Here's why...

1. Betty is also a Lefty! As someone who identifies very strongly as left-handed, I love reading about other lefties. I had no idea Betty was a lefty and was so pleasantly surprised!

2. The book is candid. She doesn't sugar-coat any of her life struggles or flaws, but at the same time, it's not a sob story. She's not asking you to feel sorry for her, she's just being honest. Especially with an auto-biography, it was refreshing to read something that was infused with pain and heart-break, but also with joy and fulfillment. Life isn't all tragedy or elation. There is a mix and to see that from someone else made Betty relatable in a unique way.

3. Betty is funny. She is honest to a fault, but not mean. Her stories are so outlandish, but she tells them in such a way that they are believable. She really is all that and more and she had me laughing through the whole book.

4. Finally, after turning the last page, I was inspired. This is a woman who is not afraid to get up and do things and to demand things out of the people around her and the situations she finds herself in. After reading this, I want to go out and do things!

So, to say I enjoyed the book would be an understatement. My only criticism would be that the chapters were a little long. Otherwise all I can say is if you haven't already added this to your reading list, you are missing out. Until next time, XO

Dressing Up a T-Shirt for Five Years

Sunday, May 28, 2017

2017, summer, t-shirt, statement piece, sparkly, pink, OOTD,

Hello all! Happy Sunday! Today is Lefty Living Life's five year anniversary, can you believe it? It seems like just yesterday I decided to start a blog with no plan, no vision, and absolutely no idea what I was doing. We've come a long way in five years and I want to take this time to say thank you. Your support, continued following, and feedback mean the world to me and make this whole process so much more fun! So thank you for sticking with me and here's to another five years!
2017, summer, t-shirt, statement piece, sparkly, pink, OOTD,

With today marking five years, it seemed only fitting that I wear one of the pieces that has been with me for almost the entire time. This New York Times graphic tee is by far one of my favorite pieces in my closet and it is one of those pieces that I keep coming back to time and time again.
2017, summer, t-shirt, statement piece, sparkly, pink, OOTD,

Normally, I would say I'm not a t-shirt girl. But if there is any tie between my outfits and my style over the years, it is that there is no such thing as too many sparkles and I love dressing up an outfit. Whether it is dressing up jeans and a t-shirt or a sundress, I love experimenting and finding ways to make my outfits a little nicer and a little more sparkly.
2017, summer, t-shirt, statement piece, sparkly, pink, OOTD,

The inspiration for this probably all comes from my high school English class when I was introduced to Oscar Wilde. Wilde has become one of my favorite authors and my favorite quote is from him: "You can never be overdressed or over educated." I connected immediately with this quote because I always seem to overshoot the mark when it comes to formality whether I am trying to or not.
2017, summer, t-shirt, statement piece, sparkly, pink, OOTD,

This t-shirt for example, is perfect for dressing up. The neutral color palette makes it easy to pair with almost anything whether it is a tulle skirt, lots of pink, or big earrings and a suit jacket. Suit jackets are great whether you are wearing them to work or otherwise. I love the look of a t-shirt and big jewels with a jacket. There is something so classic but fun about it, that is right up my alley.
2017, summer, t-shirt, statement piece, sparkly, pink, OOTD,

So, thank you again for sticking with me these past five years and have a fabulous Sunday! XO

How to Wear...Neon

Saturday, May 27, 2017

how to wear, OOTD, neon, 2017, summer, J.Crew, Kate Spade, Nars, Omega,

Hello all! Happy Saturday! Today marks the start of a new Saturday blog series and I can't wait to hear your feedback. Starting today, Saturday blog posts are going to center around fashion and outfit posts, but also answer a question about how to wear a certain trend or item of clothing, or just give ideas in general about how to integrate certain pieces into your wardrobe. Just like with my other blog series, I would love to hear your feedback and I welcome any and all suggestions!
how to wear, OOTD, neon, 2017, summer, J.Crew, Kate Spade, Nars, Omega,

So, here goes! As you know, My typical color palette leans towards girly pastels and jewel tones, but I've been loving the new neon trends and have been trying to find ways to integrate those bright colors into my summer wardrobe.
how to wear, OOTD, neon, 2017, summer, J.Crew, Kate Spade, Nars, Omega,

My first suggestions if you are hesitant on the neon, start with something small like neon earrings, a necklace, or some kind of accessory. Then, you don't have to commit your entire outfit to the neon trend, but can still mix your typical color palette up. These earrings and this necklace are absolutely to die for and would look great against black, navy or white. Also both are on sale at J.Crew right now!
how to wear, OOTD, neon, 2017, summer, J.Crew, Kate Spade, Nars, Omega,

If you are feeling more adventurous with your neon additions, finding a neon dress is a full commitment, but does take out some of the work of trying to pair a top or a bottom with it. Personally, I think a neon dress or top is the best option. Neon bottoms seem like a lot and a neon top is easy to wear with jeans or white jeans and easy to tone down with a cardigan or a jean jacket thrown on top.

If you are going the dress route, make sure the dress itself fits well and is something you are comfortable in. You don't want to branch out with color and style at the same time because you will feel overwhelmed. I like both of these options because they are pretty simple in design, but are both flattering. Both also focus on one neon color, not multiple. Wearing one neon color is enough if you ask me.
how to wear, OOTD, neon, 2017, summer, J.Crew, Kate Spade, Nars, Omega,

Once you find your neon piece, the hardest thing for me was accessorizing. I think the key is going simple. Nude shoes (black would work well too I think) looked great and classed up the outfits without adding any additional colors or details.

Jewelry-wise, I think the darker color the better. Of course, I couldn't not wear a necklace and I struggled to find ones that looked good. But, I discovered that if your necklace is a darker tone than your neon, then it helps to quiet the loud color a little bit. With this, as with anything else, the key is to be confident and also to feel comfortable. You will never be able to walk out of your house with your head high if you are uncomfortable so know your limits. Make sure to leave comments below and see you next time! XO

Body Suit with Girly Details

2017, summer, OOTD, patterns, J.Crew, girly

Happy Friday! We have been getting crazy amounts of rain here the past couple of days, the sun is finally out today! I am so excited that it is nice outside because it gives me an excuse to wear my bodysuit, which is by far my favorite piece in my closet right now. It is surprisingly comfy and also has been easier than I expected to pair with things.
2017, summer, OOTD, patterns, J.Crew, girly

So far, it has also been especially easy to pair with statement jewelry and other patterns. Anything off the shoulder is a great opportunity to wear big earrings. They are easy to show-off and don't interfere with your collar because you don't have one! For more ideas on wearing statement earrings check out this post

This bodysuit is also great for mixing patterns. Since you have to "tuck it in" it is easy to pair with high-waited jeans and a belt or something like these shorts.
2017, summer, OOTD, patterns, J.Crew, girly

I love how these are high-waisted because it is easy to tuck things in, which is hard to find with shorts. I also love the pleating, which gives them a girly detail and helps keep you cool if you are out in the heat. Well, that's all for now, XO

Professional with my own twist

Thursday, May 25, 2017

2017, summer, OOTD, work wear, professional

Hello all! This post has been a couple of days in the making as yesterday I wasn't feeling quite up to it. Anyways, something that I always struggle with is finding the perfect balance between appropriate and still me for an outfit. I always tend to over dress and over accessorize if I'm being honest.
2017, summer, OOTD, work wear, professional

But now that I am out of school and in the workforce full-time, I've been working on my work wear outfits. The key for me is toning down my style a little bit so it's not overwhelming and is still practical to be at work all day. But at the same time, I still want to feel comfortable in my outfits and to feel like me.
2017, summer, OOTD, work wear, professional

Finding this balance has been challenging and I am definitely still working out the kinks. But with this outfit, I finally felt like I found the balance. A shift dress and a cardigan are a classic work combination and always make me feel professional.
2017, summer, OOTD, work wear, professional

I adore big necklaces, obviously, and this color necklace is perfect with the high neck of this dress. It lays just so and almost looks like it is a part of the dress. The bun also worked well because it shows off the color necklace nicely.Whenever I wear my hair up, I always like to wear fun earrings and show off something normally hidden by my hair. This time, I kept my earrings smaller but accessorized with these neon glasses. They stand out so much more with my hair up!
2017, summer, OOTD, work wear, professional

The key for me with this outfit was keeping the outfit itself pretty simple and classic, but adding my personal touches in with my accessories. Do y'all have any tips for dressing in the work world or questions for how to do so? I'd love to hear about it! Until next time, XO

What I'm Up To

Monday, May 22, 2017

Watching: Harry Styles on James Corden- Harry Styles was on James Corden's The Late Late Show all last week and he was phenomenal! I love James Corden already and loved seeing more of Harry Styles and the two cracked jokes and sang their way through the week. If you only watch one skit, make sure to check out their carpool karaoke. It was one of my favorite carpool karaokes so far!

Listening to: Harry Style's new album- After watching James Corden and hearing him perform some of the songs, I've had this new album on repeat the last couple of days. It is so different and a breath of fresh air.

Reading: Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty- Now that I've started the TV show, it seemed only fitting that I should read the book. I'll let you know how it is!

Until next time, XO

Chocolate Cupcakes

Sunday, May 21, 2017

As you can see, I'm only slightly exciting about eating this!

Hello all! I hope you are enjoying your Sunday so far! Mine has been especially lazy and perfect as I am recovering from a cold. Those of you who know me know that I have a HUGE sweet tooth. I love baking especially chocolate treats and I love eating them even more. Ever since I was little, our special treat dessert at home has been these chocolate cupcakes. My mom got the recipe from her college roommate's mom and my sister and I have always been obsessed with them. They are super easy to make and absolutely delicious and I attached the recipe below. Enjoy and if you have any yummy recipes you recommend, I would love to hear about them! Until next time, XO

Turtlenecks for Summer

Friday, May 19, 2017

2017, OOTD, summer, turtleneck, cheetah, pink, leather,

If you have been following along in 2017, this is old news, but for all of my new readers, I am obsessed with turtlenecks. I was so sad with all of spring, summer, and fall in front of me without being able to wear this fabulous item. But, I found a solution! At least for the transitional months.
2017, OOTD, summer, turtleneck, cheetah, pink, leather,

I just found these sleeveless turtlenecks at Anthropologie and I couldn't be more excited. They are very lightweight and have a lot of stretch so they are perfect for layering on these hard-to-prep-for spring days.
2017, OOTD, summer, turtleneck, cheetah, pink, leather,

I ended up getting one in black and one in gray. I know I will wear the black one to death, but gray is a new color for me. It will be fun to experiment with these in the coming weeks!
2017, OOTD, summer, turtleneck, cheetah, pink, leather,

Do y'all have nay ideas for how to wear them? I am thinking big statement jewelry and lots of pink! Until next time, XO

Denim on Denim

Tuesday, May 16, 2017

2017, OOTD, summer, chambray, sparkly,

Hello all! Happy Tuesday! As it is for most people, denim is a staple in my wardrobe whether I am dressing it up with heels and big jewelry or just hanging out with a t-shirt and jeans. I also love chambray shirts. They are great tucked into a skirt or worn as a cardigan over a sun dress. But I hate the idea of not being able to wear two of my favorite pieces together. Here are my two secrets to wearing denim on denim without wearing a Texas Tuxedo.
2017, OOTD, summer, chambray, sparkly,

1. Do not wear the same color wash. Make sure your two washes are very distinct. This is the one time when matching is bad. The more contrasting your wash colors, the more cohesive your outfit will be without looking like a matching set.
2017, OOTD, summer, chambray, sparkly,
2. Do not be too aggressive with your denim. If you are already wearing a denim shirt and jeans, you do not need to add a jean jacket. My rule of thumb is two denim items per outfit. That typically keeps me from going too overboard.
2017, OOTD, summer, chambray, sparkly,

Of course, there are probably all kinds of rules we could come up with, but I try and not get too bogged down with that kind of stuff. When in doubt, stick with your gut and some sparkles can never hurt! Until next time, XO

What I'm Up To

Monday, May 15, 2017

Watching: Arrival- My sister is home for the next week and on Saturday, she wanted to watch this sci-fi movie about an alien landing. Sci-fi and aliens normally aren't my thing, but I agreed to try it. I surprisingly really enjoyed the movie. It was very well written and I had not idea what was going to happen. Plus, Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner were both great. If you are looking for something different, I would definitely recommend this.

Listening to: There's Nothing Holding Me Back by Shawn Mendes- I am always looking for peppy, upbeat songs to sing along to on my commute. This song is so catchy and fun and has been perfect to wake me up and keep me focused on my drive.

Reading: Kate and I finally finished Victoria and it was amazing! I loved it. But now that we've finished, we just started a new book that Kate picked out called "Behind Her Eyes". I just started it this morning, but I'll let you know how it goes.

As always, I would love any and all suggestions! Until next time, XO

Building Some Confidence One Ruffle At A Time

Friday, May 12, 2017

Hello all! Happy Friday! Today's post is going to be a little different than usual, but thanks to Dia&Co, I am going to branch out a little, so stick with me please. I would love to hear your feed back so please comment below or email me at leftylivinglife@gmail.com
2017, OOTD, personal, ruffle, summer, pink, stripes,

I think every girl at one point or another has had issues about her self-esteem and how she looks. I certainly have! It is something I have struggled with for years and sometimes still have problems with. Despite this insecurity, I have tried not to let it affect my outlook on life and my style. However, that only works so well. They were still tons of styles and cuts of clothing I would never wear because they made me feel unattractive or uncomfortable in general.
2017, OOTD, personal, ruffle, summer, pink, stripes,

It wasn't until recently I really became comfortable in my own skin and how I looked. A lot of this confidence came with growing up and figuring out who I am as a person. But a lot of it also came because I decided I was tired of other people's opinions and ideas of beauty getting the best of me. I reached a point a few years ago where I decided that I was going to wear whatever I wanted because I liked it, not because someone told me it made me look pretty or because it was trendy.
2017, OOTD, personal, ruffle, summer, pink, stripes,

Let me tell you, since then, life has been so much fun and picking out my outfit everyday is a joy and a true reflection of me. Take this off-the-shoulder body suit for example. If you had told me I would be wearing something this skin tight and low cut a couple years ago, I would have laughed in your face. But now, I didn't even hesitate to buy it 3 weeks ago and I've already worn it twice! It is so fun and girly and it makes me so happy when I put it on.
2017, OOTD, personal, ruffle, summer, pink, stripes,

Clothes are so important to me. They are a creative outlet, safety net, and a true reflection of me everyday. My goal when I get dressed is to be 100% me and also feel happy and inspired by the clothes I'm wearing. Feeling confident and letting go of your insecurities is incredibly difficult, but I challenge you to try even if it's just for a moment. Buy the body suit or the neon jewelry. Take a fashion risk and buy something just because it makes you happy. I'm sure you'll look fabulous! Thank you to Dia&Co for giving me the opportunity to talk about this today! Until next time, XO

Stripes and Sequins

Thursday, May 11, 2017

2017, OOTD, spring, stripes, sequins,

Hello all! I cannot believe that it is already May 2017. It seems like just yesterday I was putting on this dress and going to my graduation party! So much has changed this year and I am so excited to see what the next year has in store for me.
2017, OOTD, spring, stripes, sequins,

Last year, I chose this dress for my graduation party because it is so cute and it just made me happy. Whenever I am dressing for an important occasion, I try to choose things that make me feel good about how I look and make me happy. Then, I don't worry about any of that during the event itself.
2017, OOTD, spring, stripes, sequins,

I love this dress because it is striped with divers which is perfect of a summer party. I also love the cut which is unique, but still flattering. Finally, I love how there is room to add a little bling with your jewelry. How do y'all pick out an outfit for an important event? Until next time, XO

Glory of Venice

Wednesday, May 10, 2017

Photo c/o NCMA website
As I mentioned last week, Ansel Adams was not the only exhibition I saw at the North Carolina Museum of Art. They also have an open exhibition called the Glory of Venice. Stylistically, I am much more familiar with this type of art then the Ansel Adams photographs. The exhibition consisted of a lot of portraits as well a religious scenes. And the pieces ranged from the 1400s to the 1500s. By far my favorite piece was this map of Venice. It is so accurate that you can still identify streets and buildings in modern-day Venice.

The more I have studied art history, the more I find myself thinking how I would have curated the exhibition when I am visiting a museum. I loved how the NCMA painted the walls a deep, rich red. Normally museums galleries are all white, so the color was a nice change. It created the perfect atmosphere for the exhibition and helped to emphasize the colors in the works of art.
My only criticism would be that although the wall text was interesting and the art was beautiful, there was no clear central theme carried throughout the exhibition other than that the works were created in Venice. I would have displayed the works by subject matter instead of chronologically so that you could see different artistic focuses and how those changed over time in a more compelling way.
What do y'all look for when you go to art exhibitions? Until next time, XO

Bunny Butt Cookies

Tuesday, May 9, 2017

Hello all! As you have probably been able to tell by now, I love to bake and I especially love themed desserts. This is a fairly new discovery but I have loved making special holiday treats for everyone at work with fun decorations. Decorating something just gives it that extra oomph that I also look for in my outfits!

So, in honor of spring, I decided to try something new. My co-worker Jessica and I were brainstorming one day for desserts she could make for her family for Easter. By far the cutest thing we saw on Pinterest were bunny butt cakes. Yes, cakes that look like a bunny butt. They were adorable and absolutely hilarious.

Now, while I loved the idea, I am not a huge cake fan. So I decided to adapt the idea to my favorite cookie recipe, sprinkle cookies. These cookies are pretty easy to make and they are delicious. To make them into bunny butts, I split the dough into half and used half to make regular size cookies (which I cooked for 11 minutes) and half to make tiny cookies to use as the feet (I cooked these for 4 minutes).

Then, after they had cooled, I first iced all of the regular cookies with plain icing. Then I put a little bit of icing on the bottom of the tiny cookies as glue to attach them to the regular cookies. Finally, I dyed the rest of my icing pink to make the tails and the feet.

Let me tell you, these were a huge hit at work and are by far the cutest thing I've ever made. If you try them out, I'd love to hear how it goes or get any suggestions for improving them! Until next time, XO

What I'm Up To

Monday, May 8, 2017

Watching: The Catch- This is probably the least discussed of Shonda Rhimes' shows, but it is so well written! It is dramatic and fun, but not quite as emotionally fraught as her other shows. I would definitely recommend it!

Listening to: Green Light by Lorde- Lorde's new song has been on repeat for me lately! It is perfect whether I am driving, working out, or just hanging around.

Reading: Breakfast at Tiffany's- Kate and I just finished Victoria and it was fabulous! Now, I've decided to reread one of my favorites, Breakfast at Tiffany's. It is a pretty short read, but I love it!

Until next time, XO

Perfectly Undone

Thursday, May 4, 2017

2017, spring, OOTD, button-down, jenna lyons,

Hello all! I hope you are having a fabulous week so far.  Spring is one of my favorite seasons because it feels so hopeful. It is finally warm enough to spend time outside, but also cool enough that you can still have fun with your layers. For me, this means getting to wear one of my favorite things, button-downs.
2017, spring, OOTD, button-down, jenna lyons,

There is something so perfect and timeless about a good, crisp button-down. However, even with that said, button-downs can get boring and need a little something extra to complete your outfit. For this, I always look to Jenna Lyons who is the queen of perfectly undone.
2017, spring, OOTD, button-down, jenna lyons,

First, I started with a striped button-down that has the extra details of an embroidered collar and cuffs. Then I added fun earrings and shoes. Whenever I wear a button-down or masculine inspired clothing, I always try and add feminine details through my accessories. This keeps the outfit from feeling too boxy or masculine.
2017, spring, OOTD, button-down, jenna lyons,

The final styling came straight from Jenna Lyons- the half tucked, half un-tucked look. I would recommend high-waisted jeans for this so you have enough shirt-tail to hang out. Then, you want to tuck in the side with the buttons so the buttoned part of the shirt lays flat once you are done.
2017, spring, OOTD, button-down, jenna lyons,

What do y'all think of this look? Perfectly undone but perfectly stylish? I would love to hear your thoughts! Until next time, XO
